Progressive Water Treatment Manufactures Custom Reducing Crosses with the T-DRILL Method: “Amazed That Machines Like This Exist”

Progressive Water Treatment manufactures water treatment systems and equipment for municipal, industrial and pure water applications. Specific systems include reverse osmosis (RO), media filtration, ultrafiltration and electrodeionization systems. PWT produces large amounts of stainless steel piping, often fitted with high-pressure convertibles, as well as PVC piping for certain applications. For more than 20 years, the collaring and flanging of both materials has been conducted with T-DRILL machines.

RO systems are PWT’s primary product. For RO’s, PWT produces a large number of headers which typically have several branches on one side. For President Marc Stevens, one of the most notable advantages of the T-DRILL methods is not having to purchase costly reducing crosses and T-pieces – with T-DRILL machines, the fittings are manufactured in-house, leading to significant cost savings. With the straight T-DRILL collars and with no crosses or T’s involved, the welder does not have to spend time on alignments or fit-ups. There is also no warping or bowing in the pipe. The process only takes a couple of minutes, significantly bringing down man hours required for welding.

“I often look at the headers we produce and recognize the significant cost savings we have achieved. Utilizing our T-DRILL machines to manufacture reducing crosses is one of their most impressive aspects. When customers see what we are able to do with stainless steel piping, they are amazed that machines like this even exist”, Stevens says.

T-DRILL Method Produces Smooth Radius Corners for Optimal Water Flow

In the water treatment industry, maintaining optimal flow characteristics is essential. Poor water flow can lead to several issues, such as inadequate pressure, water quality issues, increased maintenance costs and even pipe failure.

“Using traditional methods, drilling a hole and inserting a fitting can create turbulence in the piping due to branches intruding into the flow unless the pipe is carefully prepared. For instance, a header with six branches would experience significantly poorer flow characteristics, potentially leading to numerous problems over time. The T-DRILL method produces smooth radius corners, ensuring optimal water flow and significantly enhancing the quality of our products.”

In the future, PWT aims to elevate its level of production automation and is open to integrating more automated T-DRILL machines into their operations.

“T-DRILL machines have tremendously increased our productivity, making our production faster, better and cleaner. We often get asked about how we manufacture our branches. Once, a vendor came in to promote their products and saw a T-DRILL machine in our shop for the first time. They were so impressed with our ability to create custom branches that they left with our brochure. This experience highlights how many people are unaware of the productivity-enhancing technology available and their high level of amazement when they discover it.”
